25 Questions to ask yourself before booking a one-way ticket

There is something exciting about booking a one-way ticket. No return date, fixed plan and total freedom. Just you, your backpack, and the idea that you’ll figure it out along the way.

After working in London for a few years followed by one and off 1-2 months trip to Southeast Asia, I was feeling ready to leave my flat and my routine for good and experience what felt like total freedom of choice. If I wanted to be in Thailand for 3 months or follow a new friend to Bali, it was all made possible. So I booked a one-way ticket to Southeast Asia and walked away from everything familiar.

I had already travelled a lot, I was used to solo trips, and I thought I understood what long-term travel would feel like. But once I actually did it, I realised it was a completely different experience that my 1-2 months trips. It wasn’t just travel anymore. It was movement without a fixed base, constant decision-making, and rebuilding your sense of “normal” over and over again.

And even though I loved it, I also ran into things I didn’t expect at all.

The most striking thing is that I got bored of travelling. Something I had heard other people talk about but never thought would apply to me. But here it was, going to another temple or doing another boat tour, really wasn’t feeling that exciting anymore. I also struggled with the constant packing and unpacking. I realised how much I actually value having my own things around me, even the small ones. And I went through phases of intense social life, meeting people every day… followed by stretches of unexpected loneliness where I wanted connection but didn’t always manage to create it.

It really challenged me in ways I didn’t anticipate. And because the best guarantee to experience a fun solo trip is to know what to expect, I created a checklist of questions you should ask yourself before you book a one-way ticket so you can anticipate what you’re actually stepping into, not just the highlight version you see online.

So here are 25 questions I wish I had asked myself more honestly before I left.
